BTR Terminal Expansion & Renovation Update
Construction for the terminal renovation project is on schedule (see photos below). The expanded rotunda area is taking shape while a temporary wall separates the existing rotunda from the portion under construction.
The original rotunda area will become an arrival court, providing access for un-ticketed airport guests awaiting arriving passengers. Today, airport guests meeting arriving passengers wait in the same area where arriving passengers exit the secure area of the terminal and departing passengers clear security, creating a bottleneck. Prior to September 11, 2001, un-ticketed airport visitors could access the secure area of the terminal to meet or see off passengers, but post 9/11 security changes restricted secure area access to ticketed passengers only. Since most un-ticketed visitors chose to enter the secure area prior to the 9/11 changes, the current bottleneck did not exist.
New restrooms and a vending area will also be added to the existing rotunda, which will provide a spacious waiting area with amenities for un-ticketed visitors. TSA security screening will be relocated to the expanded area of the rotunda, and an additional screening position will be added. An interior glass wall will separate the arrival court portion of the expanded rotunda from the new secure area that will include TSA screening.
