Movie scouts for Columbia Pictures have visited the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) several times in recent months to determine airport site locations for the upcoming movie titled Battle: Los Angeles. A number of significant scenes will be filmed at BTR in the fall, and more than half of the movie will be filmed in the Greater Baton Rouge Area. The production is expected to result in $25 million in direct local spending.
BTR will be Santa Monica Airport in the movie; and most of the airport filming will take place in front of the Louisiana Aircraft hangars. The State of Louisiana financial incentives make it more cost effective to film here. Louisiana now ranks as the third largest state for film production after California and New York.
The film has been described as a cross between War of the Worlds and Saving Private Ryan. Aliens who want Earth's water have invaded Los Angeles, and a group of civilians are trapped behind enemy lines. Aaron Eckhart [Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight] plays the leader of a rescue platoon; Michelle Rodriquez [Lost, Fast & Furious, Avatar] and Bridget Moynahan [Eli Stone, Six Degrees, Sex and the City] have also signed on.
The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport will benefit from rental income and increased passenger traffic between Los Angeles and Baton Rouge associated with the filming.
